Picardo challenges Spain over Gibraltar waters

THE Chief Minister of Gibraltar has challenged the Spanish Government to go to International Maritime Courts over the waters surrounding the Rock, Europa Press reports.

“I have challenged Spain to go to the International Maritime Court to defend their position regarding the Rock waters” Fabian Picardo said, “but Spain never wants to accept. Maybe they’re not so sure about their position”.

He says he has the utmost respect for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo, but that the water around Gibraltar belong to the Rock and solutions need to be found to the conflict with Spanish fishermen.

He said that the “blackmail” which Spain is carrying out with the fishermen “won’t work” and insisted that “we have to continue getting along well and finding solutions.”

He explained that Gibraltar hasn’t banned Spanish fishermen from the area, but wants to stop them from using methods which have been banned since 1991.

Regarding the absence of Queen Sofia at Jubilee celebrations in London, he said it was “sad” that the Queen of England was unable to celebrate with her cousin and referred to it as an 18th century reaction in the 21st century”.
