Earning a dog’s trust

Hi Connie,

I want to know how to get Spanish Podenco to trust us.

This stray (called Robbie) has been outside the hotel where I work for some time.

When she first arrived she wouldn’t get closer than 10 metres away from us.

Now she will run around us and stays about two metres away. She must have had a horrible owner as she has a yellow collar but is scared of EVERYTHING.

We also think her tail has been broken. She has already had a litter of puppies and is possibly pregnant again.

We fed them when they appeared but they all had to be put down as they picked up some disease.

I am really worried the same thing is going to happen again. It would be ideal to get her spayed. How can we get her to trust us?

Kind Regards,

Natalie

Hello Natalie,

The dog is now feral and the more you try to catch or touch her, the worse it is.

I think you are a wonderful person, however one cannot fight nature which in this case is the result of humans since she has a collar.

Carry on feeding but do not try to catch her, she will survive with your help.

If you can ask a vet to give you some sedative to put into the food this is one sure way of capturing her for spaying and examination.

If you do this it is wise to cover her head and feet with a blanket, this will make the dog less stressed.

Kind regards,
Connie
