DOCTORS at a Benalmadena (Malaga) hospital have successfully carried out the first operation in Spain to repair a rare congenital heart defect in a child.
Heart Surgeon Joachin Schafers peformed the unicuspid aortic valve repair at Xanit International Hospital where he is a member of the cardiology department.
Professor Schafers is particularly reknown for this type of procedure, using a technique he developed.
This is one of the main reasons why this particular family from Bilbao decided to travel to Benalmadena ( Malaga) to have the operation performed on their four year old son.
The boy had previously undergone two failed operations in his hometown, a hospital official said.
“The Boy´’ postoperative recovery was excellent, being discharged in great general condition only 5 days after the surgery,” said Dr Carlos Porras a surgeon at Xanit which assisted Schafers during the procedure
