San Pedro de Alcantara underpass to be opened in June

THE San Pedro de Alcantara underpass on the A-7 motorway will be opened in June. Minister Ana Pastor revealed that within days of taking up her position, she was called by Marbella Mayor, Angeles Muñoz, and promised that it would be finished.

The Ministry of Public Works will take the A-7 motorway through an underpass which will leave 90,000m2 in the heart of the town open for development.

The work should have been finished in 2009, and last year the Ministry promised it would be done by early 2012.

The former Ministry of Public Works, under Jose Blanco, was harshly criticized by the conservative Partido Popular for the delays in the work, due to lack of payments.

However, the new PP team has promised that it will have “absolute priority” and explained that €10 million remains to be paid.

Work began more almost five years ago in order to stop the motorway from dividing the area in two, and do away with the need for traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to make traffic flow more fluidly.

Once completed an estimated 65,000 cars will use the one-kilometre underpass daily.
