2 dentists in Garrucha questioned by police

A DENTAL surgery in Garrucha closed after the owner, a dentist from Madrid and the Colombian dentist working with him have been detained by the police, according to Spanish newspaper Teleprensa.

The Spanish Press reported that both dentists were detained because the Colombian was found to be lacking in the qualifications required by Spanish law to practice dentistry.

Another dentist in Garrucha told the EWN that the Colombian dentist may be qualified in his home country but perhaps hasn’t completed the correct legal process in order to ‘homologar’ or validate the qualifications in compliance with European and Spanish law.

Neighbours and business owners in the Calle Mayor, Garrucha’s main street, confirmed that on Friday February 3, police cars arrived outside the building where the dentist has his surgery, and that they saw two men being taken away.

Police were alerted when a patient made an official complaint to the official school of dentists in Almeria after having a number of teeth pulled out and other dental work done costing €940.

When contacted the owner of the surgery told EWN it was a misunderstanding and declined to offer further comment.

It remains unclear if the dentist surgery had reopened at the time of going to press.
