Berja care home to change hands

THE Care Home for the Elderly in Berja will no longer be run by the company ASER.

According to the company’s 70 members of staff, who have been protesting every Thursday since last July, they were paid “late, badly or never” despite ASER receiving money from the Junta de Andalucia Council of Equality and Social Welfare which pays for the stay of residents at the home.

The staff are allegedly owed their salaries for December and January and their Christmas bonus.

The local mayor, Antonio Torres, met with other companies which specialize in management of care homes, and the contract will probably be assigned to Gerovitalia as soon as possible.

The town hall has no obligation towards ASER as the company has no solvency, which was one of the conditions of the contract.

The town hall is now waiting for an agreement to be reached with the staff so that they get paid before assigning the management of the home to the new company.

The Delegate for Equality and Social Welfare in Almeria, Adela Segura, confirmed that the company has always been paid on time.
