THE number of passengers at El Altet airport in Alicante has fallen by 11.9 per cent in January compared to the same month last year.
This is more than the average fall in passenger numbers in the Valencia Region of 10 per cent, according to airport authority AENA. In January, 424,309 passengers passed through El Altet.
At a national level, 11.76 million passengers passed through Spanish airports last month, 2.9 per cent less than the same month last year. Barajas airport in Madrid saw the most passengers with 3.3 million, although this was a 6.3 per cent down on January 2011.
Meanwhile, El Prat airport in Barcelona saw 2.1million passengers, which is a 7.8 per cent increase on last January.
Gran Canaria, Tenerife-Sur and Lanzarote airports also enjoyed year-on-year increases in passenger numbers in January .
