Fifth year primary school children in Almeria, and throughout Andalucia each received a 10-inch, green laptop computer this week.

The Junta de Andalucia (regional government) supplies school children with free computers the year they turn eleven.

Children take the computers to school to use in class and also use them after school for homework.

The computers are installed with an exclusive operating system, and parental control software to protect against connecting to inappropriate websites.

The Junta stated that “digital competence” is one of the basic skills that pupils should acquire. The board of education said that children need to know how to find information, and communicate what they find in order for them to learn.

Students of all nationalities keep their computers for the fifth and sixth years of primary school and throughout high school if they continue to live in Andalucia.

Although families don’t pay for the computers, the Education board informed parents in writing that the approximate cost to the taxpayer is €265 per computer.
