Foreign Flavours – Foreword by Alexander McCall Smith

You’ve probably seen recipes for lamb before, but what about stolen lamb?

And you’ve probably tasted a few interesting combinations in your time, but how about cheese, snails and dandelion jam?

You’ve almost certainly read guides that told you where to eat, but what about when?

Nobody has better stories about food – weird, wonderful or both – than the traveller, and best of all the traveller who has had the time to get to know a place through its plates, its kitchens and its cooks.

Foreign Flavours is the second anthology from the ex-pat writers group Writers Abroad, an online collection of writers who either are, or have been, living abroad and coping with cultures and cuisines alien to their own.

Sometimes very alien! Like a long conversation in the kitchen with an impossibly interesting friend, Foreign Flavours meanders through a unique and strangely coherent collection of fiction, non-fiction and recipe; food as experienced by the curious, the courageous and the confounded.

Foreign Flavours aims to warm your heart as well as your belly; all proceeds from the book will go to The Book Bus, a registered charity that aims to increase literacy rates in the developing world.

Renowned author of The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Alexander McCall Smith, has written the foreword.

So the next time you want to take your eyes off the recipe and while away a few minutes with a short story while your stew simmers, you’ll be able to – without changing books!
