ESRA New Age Kurling Competition success

Kurling-058

Winner Barry McCollin with Alberto Fernandez from Maison Crestatx

AT the weekend ESRA North played host to the Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and eventually to the Finals of The ESRA New Age Kurling Competition, and what a competition it proved to be.

The Competition had proved so popular, that preliminary competitions had to be held to reduce the number of finalists to 16. After an excellent lunch at Meson Crestatx, the competitors moved into the ESRA Crestatx Club room and the excitement began.

The two finalists, Barry McCollin and John Roberts were very impressive, both using different tactics to out-wit their opponent.

There were 10 ends and after the eighth end, it was 6 all, and after the tenth end it was eight-all, so a deciding end had to be played. The excited, and noisy spectators watched as the referee called the score. “one red”, followed by “one blue”, then “one red”, “one blue”.

The two finalists were so evenly matched but at the end it was Barry Mc Collin who emerged as the ESRA New Age Kurling Champion to the cheers and applause of the delighted audience.

This successful competition was organized by ESRA North Vice Chair Brian Lowndes and sponsored by Restaurant Maison Crestatx who also provided the superb trophies, so it was entirely appropriate that the trophies for the winner, Barry McCollin and the runner-up,Kurling-066John Roberts should be presented by the popular Alberto Fernandez of Maison Crestatx.

Rosemary Bull, Chairman of ESRA North presented certificates for semi-finalists Brian Lowndes and Malcolm Redford and there was a surprise certificate for Beryl Lear, as the only lady competitor to get through to the quarter finals.

A very popular award. Competitors and spectators could not have asked for a more exciting finish to the competition.

New Age Kurling is a new sport to Mallorca, but the ESRA event proved what an enthralling and fun sport this can be.
