LOCAL POLICE in Mijas are searching for vandals who sprayed graffiti on La Cala watchtower, which is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest.
The tower is one of many along the coast of Andalucia, dating back to the 16th century, which were built to defend the kingdom from attacks by sea during the Nasrid period.
It is currently used as the Mijas Historical Ethnological Museum which explains the importance of the watchtowers.
A crime against historical heritage such as this can be punished with up to three years in prison. The tower will now be cleaned while the search for the culprits continues.
