A DEPLETED Torrevieja Tigers team slumped to a 53:0 home defeat to defending champions Murcia on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Torrevieja.
Missing seven regulars though circumstances or injury, the Tigers, looking splendid in their new strip could never manage to control the faster hands and feet of the visitors and went into the break a man down, through a sending off and 39 points to the worse!
The Murcia XV put on a great display to overcome the very physical and technically adept powerful Torrevieja forwards, and after about twenty minutes managed to find a way to control the majority of scrums and line-outs.
The defending champions quickly discovered that by putting the ball into the hands of their backs that Torrevieja’s back line could be easily outpaced and coupled with ill-discipline, in that the Tigers would forget to retire ten metres when a penalty was given against them, they easily outran the Tigers, who where showing a distinct lack of fitness in the final quarter of the game.
Murcia ran in eight tries, converted five of these and added a penalty for an overall score of 53-points.
Torrevieja could have put a few points on the board if they had chosen to kick a couple of penalties, but chose to make a game of it and went for the full seven points instead.
Unfortunately, their lack of discipline and poor handling resulted in many turnovers and so the Tigers came away with nothing at the end of the game.
Torrevieja Tigers train at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Torrevieja and are always looking for new players, sponsors and supporters. They cater for players of all ages from under 12 through the senior ranks.
