DURING 2011, a total of 956 businesses opened in Benidorm, according to latest data.
This is less than 2010’s 1,091, but more than 2009’s 909.
Four in 10 of the businesses opened last year were cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs, karaoke bars, or ice-cream salons, official figures show.
More than eight per cent were travel agencies, hotels, hairdressers and beauty salons.
In recent years there has been a decline in the number of businesses relating to real estate, video rental stores, variety shops and money exchange offices.
