BRITAIN’S BBC News is preparing a programme about the social consequences of unemployment in Almeria, a city with the highest level of unemployment in Spain.
The decision from the BBC News delegation in Brussels to prepare a radio and TV programme about unemployment in the city comes three months after Eurostat published a survey comparing unemployment rates in the EU in which Andalucia was shown to have the second highest figures.
The team is expected to arrive to start filming at the end of this month. Almeria city ended 2010 with 27.1 per cent of its population unemployed, and the provincial total for the third trimester of last year registered 35.6 per cent unemployment.
According to the National Institute of Statistics, 126,800 people were unemployed in the province, with 61,000 of them looking for their first job or having left their last place of work more than one year ago.
