PROSTITUTION is now a thing of the past in Plaza Solymar – known as 24-hour square – in Benalmadena, according to local mayor Javier Carnero.
It is a year since the town hall approved changes to local law which included fines for anyone who offered or requested sexual services in public. The socialist mayor says that although there were 12 reports from the Local Police regarding prostitution in the area in September and October, in the past weeks, there have been none.
The mayor also explained that one person had been fined for requesting sex. He also reported that the increased police presence in the area has not only done away with prostitution but also dissuaded drinking in the streets, with reports falling from 187 in September, to just three last weekend.
There have also been fewer fights, robberies, and complaints from residents regarding excessive noise in the area.
