Afghan Heroes Gala Ball raises €14,800 in Calpe

Saturday night saw the Afghan Heroes Gala Ball in Calpe’s Diamante Hotel. At the time of going to press, the precise amount raised for the stood at €14,800, and it can only go up.

Guests were asked to stand to welcome several mothers whom had lost their sons Afghanistan. “It was very emotional,” said Nicki Burgess from EWN.

Four Royal Marine Commandos attended in full dress uniform, and were given a rousing reception. EWN were present in force, with publishers Steven and Michel Euesden coming up especially from the Costa del Sol to help support the event, and bringing with them members of the paper’s team for the evening.

The band Strickland gave great entertainment, and what not many who were present might not know is that as well as the other star acts appearing, their lead singer, Adam King, is himself an ex-West End theatre star, who headed the cast of Little Shop of Horrors in London’s Comedy theatre in the early 80’s.

The giant flat screen TV donated by EWN as a charity raffle prize, was won by one of the Afghan Heroes’ mothers, Carol Brackpool.

Unfortunately, Carol has the logistical problem of how to get it back to the UK, and EWN have been asked to put out an SOS to anyone who can help her in that regard. It would be greatly appreciated.

Carol can be contacted via the events organizers, Bill Bertham, on 965836794, or email bill.bertham@gmail.com

The event would not have taken place without the organizers, Bill and his wife Marion, together with the great work of Karen Webb and Ron Goodings. A big thanks to them, and to all who helped make the event a massive success for such a worthwhile and inspirational cause.
