THE new prison under construction in Archidona will have sports and cultural facilities, workshops and a football ground.
The prison, which is due to open in 2013 to alleviate the overcrowding at Alhaurin de la Torre prison, will be on a 350,000m2 plot in La Saucedilla area. The prison will actually be like a small city with green areas, 17 different buildings, 1,008 cells of 13m2 each, compared to the usual 10m2, and ample facilities for the prisoners to carry out different activities.
It will also have state-of-the-art technology in the buildings to control the prisoners.
The lighting will be energy efficient to save money, and solar panels will be installed to heat 70 per cent of the water in the prison, which will also have its own sewage plant.
