A BELGIAN couple holidaying in Guardamar del Segura recognised two people who had stolen their vehicle at gunpoint in Belgium several weeks earlier.
The victims of the robbery called the emergency services and while they were waiting for them to arrive, found the vehicle nearby and slashed the tyres to prevent the thieves from stealing it again.
When Guardia Civil and Local Police arrived on the scene, following the victims’ description, they arrested the two alleged robbers, aged 47 and 20, who had the car keys on them, and found that an international search and arrest warrant for armed robbery had been issued against them.
When they searched the car, they found the gun with which they threatened the owners of the vehicle, although it turned out to be a fake.
The detained man was serving a sentence for serious sexual crimes against minors and had escaped from the police when he was being taken to court, thanks to his partner handing him a weapon. The two fled and stole the car which has now been recovered.
They were taken to the National Court in Madrid for extradition.
