Mijas donkey statue by Lazaro Crus could be twinned with Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid

MIJAS Town Hall is promoting the twinning of their donkey statue with Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid.

This initiative aims to strengthen ties with Danish people as well as internationalize one of the village’s most photographed attractions since it was installed in February this year.

Due to its popularity, the Town Hall put a staircase so that visitors could sit on it. The bronze donkey sculpture is located in Plaza Virgen de la Peña near the donkey taxis. The life-size bronze statue was designed by artist Lazaro Crus, and commemorates one of the town’s main tourist attractions, the ‘burro taxi’.

“People of all ages want to have their photo taken on the donkey” said Mijas Tourism Councillor, Santiago Marin, who added that part of its popularity was the location.

In 2003, Mijas became home to the first Danish Church in Spain, and there are many Danish residents living in the town.
