Lightning can strike twice in the same place

I WAS playing in a local game last week when I witnessed what, to me, can only be described as a ‘miracle’. An amazing set of cards were to show themselves and the chances of what happened, “happening” were astronomical.

I have in the past discussed the chances of getting, or hitting, certain cards, like it’s a 16-1 chance of being dealt any pocket pair.

This rises to 220-1 if we name a specific pair like Aces, Kings, Queen’s etc. It’s actually harder to be dealt Ace King suited, which comes in at 331-1. Obviously any random two cards are the lowest odds at just 6-1.

But with these starting combinations safely in the hole we still have all the community cards to come and I can confirm wholeheartedly that anything can happen, even a miracle. OK firstly we need to know that there are 2,598,960 possible 5 card combinations available from a 52 card deck.

Because there are four suits in the pack, there are four “Royal Flush” possibilities. To hit a straight flush is easier, almost as rare as joint of pork at a Jewish buffet but slightly easier, as we have more cards to help our combination like 3-4-5-6-7 or 6-7-8-9-10 etc. So if we ran the computer and looked for probability of hitting a straight flush, we come up with 36 chances in 2,598,960 or a 72,194-1 chance.

So when Ian Wilson hit his straight flush it was like getting a hole in one. He nearly folded as well because I hit the flush King high and he said you win until Mickey noticed the running flush.

The very next hand he made another straight flush, unbelievable.

An astronomical 5,211,973,636 to 1 chance. Lightning really can strike twice. A miracle!
