AN exhibition of photos showing the history of Garrucha since it became independent from Vera is being held this month at the local Club de Mar.
Garrucha gained its independence on the first day of 1861, and this exhibition, ‘El tiempo detenido’ (Time Stopped) which has been organized by local journalist Manuel Leon, marks its 150-year history.
The 50 photos show what Garrucha and its people were like then, its mining and fishing tradition and its beaches.
There are photos of well-known local figures as well as anonymous residents, children, football players, anyone who has had a part in the town’s history.
Many of the older local residents say they are ‘thrilled’ to have been able to see themselves in the images.
Leon was able to collect the photos over the years with the help of 30 people who have allowed them to be used for the exhibition.
