A GERMAN man in his sixties died at his home in Elviria on Tuesday after his neighbour accidentally severed his arm while they were working with a chainsaw.
The accident occurred at approximately 1.15pm when the two men, who had been friends for two years, were pruning some branches from a pine tree on the victim’s property. He was holding the branch which needed to be cut off and the 48-year-old owner of the chain saw was handling it, but instead of cutting in a downward direction, he aimed it upwards, lost control of it and cut the victim in the right armpit, almost cutting off his arm.
He attempted to stop the bleeding while the victim’s wife called the emergency services. Local Police were the first on the scene, and although they attempted to plug the wound, neither they, nor the paramedics who arrived within minutes were able to stop the haemorrhaging.
The man who inflicted the wound was later taken to the National Police station where he was charged with negligent manslaughter.
