FOURTEEN people were arrested for allegedly being members of a drug trafficking criminal organization. They would bring cocaine in containers into the ports of Valencia and Alicante from Colombia. A total of 135kg of cocaine (87%) was discovered by sniffer dogs hidden hidden in a vehicle travelling along the A-3.
The substance was destined for Italy, where a kilo of ‘white powder’ can fetch €52,000, about €15,000 more than the price in Spain. Investigations into the criminal organization began in December when two local police officers in Parla followed a tip and discovered a cache of 500kg of cocaine in an industrial area of the city and arrested three people.
Investigators from more than a dozen law enforcement groups on the case have 18,000 pages of more than 80,000 conversations from 40 mobile phones. A network of 12 front companies dealing in the buying and selling of construction materials was used to transport the drugs.
Of those arrested there were Colombians, Cuban and Spanish, one of which is a lawyer who allegedly filtered data from the original investigation.
