THIS weekend will see the traditional Moors and Christians celebrations in Mojacar. The historical representations begin at 9.30pm on Friday at the multi-purpose facilities, and just half an hours later, troops will gather at the local ‘Fuente’ for the Moorish King to hand over the keys of the City to the Christian Monarch.
The troops will then come up into the town, accompanied by music and fireworks, and the beginning of the celebrations will be announced.
On Saturday, history repeats itself on the Playa del Descargador at 4.30pm, and then there will be a horse exhibition at the Club Hipico de Vera at 6pm, where the Moorish troops will also arrive by land and sea, and there will be belly-dancing shows, a medieval joust, and at 10pm, the presentation of the different branches within the troops.
At midday Sunday, gunpowder will be in the air with a round of shots along the beach and at 7pm, the Moors and Christians parade, with all participants in period costumes and armour will pass through the local streets.
There will also be a Medieval market in the town all weekend.
