Labour International Spain fight to save UK May Day

LABOUR supporters in Spain are throwing their weight behind the campaign to save May Day from extinction in the UK. It seems the Conservatives are making noises about replacing the May Day bank holiday with an alternative holiday either on St Georges Days in April or Trafalgar Day in October.

Costa Blanca Labour International (LI) Branch member John Mackay, said “For ideological reasons the Tories plan to convert an international day celebrated across the world into a purely national day, a sop to narrow-minded nationalism.

Their excuse it would help the UK tourist industry if the day was moved to either an earlier or later date is absolute nonsense as at that time of year, people fly to sunnier climes, like Spain and the Canaries.”

This issue arose during the LI traditional May Day lunch held at Casa Pinet restaurant in Tàrbena during which guest speaker, Martin Angus, Events Organiser for Labour Party HQ, congratulated the Branch for working closely with its Spanish sister party.

To prove a point, the chairman announced that three LI members will be standing as PSOE candidates during Sunday’s local elections. They are Kevin Bruton (Palma de Gandia) Nina Davies (Javea) and Jack Johnson (Finestrat).
