Man wanted for drugs offences arrested in Palma 24 years on

AFTER more than 20 years on the run for cocaine trafficking, a man wanted in the US was arrested in Palma where he has lived for years. Carmelo Alberto CM an Argentine national, was arrested Monday via an International arrest warrant issued by a court in Philadelphia (USA).

According to reports Carmelo, 56, had been hiding in plain sight using his real name before he was finally located by the Crime Unit in the residential neighbourhood of Camp Redo.

Together with several other compatriots, between 1987 and 1988 he smuggled several caches of cocaine from Mar del Plata (Argentina) to Philadelphia, totaling 1,360 kilos hidden inside anchovy tins.

The first 50 kilos was sent in July 1987, then between late 87 and 88 there were two more shipments of 200 and 1,117 kilos of cocaine. Only the third shipment was seized by police.

The 56-year-old was sent to prison on Tuesday while the High Court decides his extradition to the United States.

The International warrant was only issued in July 2010.

Then, mid-April 2011, Palma’s International Crime Unit mid-April received an Interpol arrest warrant requesting the location of a fugitive they had been searching for years and suspected was living on the island.
