Online retailer Amazon has announced that it will be selling a cheaper version of its Kindle e-reader, which will include advertisements on the bottom of the home page and on screensavers. The new Kindle will cost 114 dollars, 25 dollars less than the currently lowest-priced Kindle.
Seattle-based Amazon will start shipping the newest Kindle on May 3. Amazon has consistently lowered the price of the Kindle since it released the first version at 399 dollars in 2007.
The advertisers sponsoring screen savers at launch will be General Motors’ Buick car brand, Procter&Gamble’s Olay cosmetics brand and payments processor Visa.
Amazon has never revealed how many Kindles it has sold.
