Anti-Franco guerrilla members buried in Uleila del Campo

SIERRO Town Hall (Almeria) has handed over the remains of Spanish guerrilla members to their families to be buried in Uleila del Campo. Last week, the remains of Indalecio Fuentes Aguero, identified thanks to DNA testing, were handed over to his family. Known as ‘The Black Marketer’, he has been buried at the cemetery in Uleila with another man, Rafael Jimenez Ortega, known as ‘Emilio el de Bayarque’ after it was found that the two men were related.

The DNA testing also ruled out that Rafael Jimenez Ortega could have been related to a family who wished to know whether he could be their missing relative.

The information they had included birth certificates and a reference to him joining the guerrilla. However, there was also information which suggested he had no children.

Meanwhile, the remains of Indalecio Fuentes were given to his son, and a private mass was held at church before they were placed in a niche at the local cemetery. The process of identification of these ‘maquis’ 2010 after the communal grave was found and the Fuentes’s family requested he be given a proper burial.

This is the first exhumation of anti-Franco guerrilla members in Andalucia.

The two men were executed on April 18, 1947, by Guardia Civil in the Barranco de Los Ceferinos area and buried the following day in Sierro.

The ‘maquis’ were guerrillas exiled in France after the Spanish Civil War who continued to fight against the Franco regime until the early 1960s, carrying out sabotage, robberies, occupations of the Spanish Embassy in France and assassinations of Francoists, as well as contributing to the fight against Nazi Germany and the Vichy regime in France during World War II.
