Radioactive cloud reaches Malaga

STUDIES mapping the existence of radioactive iodine from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan show that it has reached Malaga. However, the levels are so low that they present no health or environmental risks, according to the Nuclear Safety Council. Three types of radioactive isotopes from the Japan disaster have been detected in Spain, iodine 130, cesium 137 and cesium 134.

The radioactive cloud has crossed the Pacific, the American continent and the North Atlantic, then descending to the Mediterranean.

Iodine has been detected in Valencia, Ferrol and Sevilla, all in higher levels than in Malaga, but still thousands of times below the recommended levels.

In any case, the radioactivity is expected to disperse and disappear within days.
