Fewer divorces in Almeria

IN 2009, there were 1,276 divorces in Almeria Province, 13.19 per cent fewer than the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics. It is not yet clear whether this is because couples are actually getting along better or because with the economic crisis, they can’t afford a divorce, which can cost around €500.

On the other hand, it could simply be because there are also fewer marriages. Back in 2005, before the crisis got a hold, there were 2,000 divorces, 25 per cent more than in 2009.

The statistics also show that more than 50 per cent of the divorces in 2009 were agreed by both parties. In the remaining cases, 436 women requested the divorce and 299 men.

In Almeria, three out of four marriages end in separation (82 cases in the province in 2009) or divorce, and the average duration of marriage is 15.2 years.

In 2009, there were no annulments in Almeria, which seems to be because once they are divorced or separated, people do not plan to marry again, and instead choose civil partnerships.

Although the number of separations has fallen, they come quicker, and after just five years of marriage, 176 couples decided on separation, 76 after almost two years and three after one year.

The age group most likely to get a divorce is 41.2 years for men and 39.2 years for women.
