Almeria clings to its gaspers

NOT only are Almerienses Andalucia’s heaviest smokers, but there were more of them in 2007 than 2005 when anti-smoking laws were first introduced and fewer wanted to stop. Almost 32 per cent lit up each day and despite the traditional male-female divide with 39 per cent of men but only 24 per cent of women smoking regularly, more of the province’s women were smoking than ever.

These figures, based on 2007 findings, were revealed as 550 pneumologists and thoracic surgeons gathered in La Linea de la Concepcion last week for the 37th annual conference of the Asociacion de Neumologia y Cirugia Toracica del Sur (Neumosur).

If Almeria showed a striking increase in regular smokers, this was due to the growing number of women smokers, warned Neumosur

One of the conference’s recurring themes was concern that Andalucia’s habitual smokers – 31 per cent of the population – gave no signs of diminishing.  This was well above Spain’s 29 per cent national average and had remained constant since 2003.

But Granada, Huelva and Malaga as well as Almeria were giving cause for concern.  Statistics for Granada were especially worrying, with the number of smokers rising from 29 to 34 per cent of the population, according to Neumosur.

Some Neumosur findings were more encouraging, however, and although the number of people who had given up smoking was hardly appreciable in Sevilla and Cordoba, there had been a reduction from 33 to 29 per cent in Cadiz and from 37 to 33 per cent in Jaen.
