Stricter controls on food imported from Japan

DUE to Fukushima nuclear power plant leaking radioactive material into the atmosphere, the Spanish Government has promised to increase controls on products imported from Japan, especially vegetables and milk. The Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality will follow the recommendations of international agencies.

Following a meeting last Tuesday, representatives of the Nuclear Safety Council gave advice on the provision of potassium iodide, which reduced the risk of thyroid cancer in people exposed to high levels of radioactivity.

However this medicine is only necessary for those who were in Japan or have visited the country and it should not be self-prescribed.

If necessary, the Government has sufficient reserves to send to Japan.
