Close call as young man escapes death by incineration

OPERATORS at Son Reus made an astonishing discovery early Sunday morning just before they were about to incinerate rubbish. There standing amidst the rubbish was a young Romanian man, who had been transported in the truck after a night of partying at a nightclub in Playa de Palma.

Thanks to the timely overview of the workers at the waste treatment plant, the 22-year old was saved from certain death.

They alerted an ambulance that took him to Son Espases Hospital where he underwent a scan, but although he had cuts and scrapes all over his body which he probably got from his ride in the garbage truck, no serious injuries were found.

Police Homicide Agents Group took over the investigation and interviewed the Romanian who said he remembered spending the night at a nightclub on the second line of Playa de Palma then walked to a taxi rank to go home, but he had no idea how he got in the container.

Two hypotheses are being considered; that he fell into the container by accident or that people in the area who took advantage of his drunken state and put him there as a practical joke.
