Two women jailed in €15k gigolo scam

THE National Court has sentenced two women to 21 months in prison and pay €15,000 in compensation for tricking hundreds of young men, promising them work as gigolos. In 2003, the two women put adverts in local and provincial press throughout Spain looking for ‘Males of all ages needed urgently for work’.

The adverts included a 902 number where a woman who called herself Miranda explained they would work as escorts for female clients.

Most of those who responded were unemployed youths or illegal immigrants, who were told to pay amounts ranging between €189 and €600 into a bank account in Torremolinos held by the two women.

More than 100 young men fell for the trick, but when they heard nothing from the company, the contacted ‘Miranda’, who gave them excuses and then refused to answer the phone.

Also, many of the transfers were made without names, so although the amount lost by those who took the case to court was €15,000, police estimate that the sum obtained by the two women could be close to €150,000.
