First round of talks to prevent Spanish airport strike action fail

Spanish airports authority, AENA, and unions have failed to reach an agreement to stop proposed Easter and Summer strike action. The strikes were called to protest against the privatisation of Spanish airports by AENA

Unions demand written guarantees from the government that workers jobs and conditions will be protected after the sale of the airports, which include the ones of Barcelona and Madrid.

Press reports suggest neither Pubic Works Minister Jose Blanco nor anyone from the department attended the meeting, sparking fresh criticism that the government is not taking swift action to solve what will have a disastrous effect on tourism.

AENA President, Juan Ignacio Lema, only attended the talks for 15 minutes, reports say.

Despite this morning’s failed talks, there is another meeting this afternoon (Thursday) at 5pm.

The proposed dates for the 22 days of strike action are presently:

April 20, 21, 24, 25 and 30

May 2, 14, 15, 19 and 20

June 13, 23 and 30

July 1, 2, 3, 4, 15 and 31

August 1, 15, 31
