K-Wave allowed to go after €310k payment

THE 133 metre K-Wave container ship which ran aground off Almayate beach last week has been given the go-ahead to continue on its way back to Algeciras. The German ship owner will have to pay two guarantees requested by Malaga Port Authorities, one for €150,000 to cover the expenses of the rescue operations, and another for €160,000 to ensure the disciplinary proceedings brought against the owner will be resolved.

The Ministry of Public Works claims that the K-Wave, which was sailing under a British flag, could have broken several State Port and Merchant Marine laws, as well as International Maritime Legislation.

It appears that they failed to set up proper surveillance to guarantee the safety of the ship, which could have prevented it from veering 24 miles off course, as well as failing to notify maritime authorities of the accident.

It is still not known how the ship, which should have been sailing in a straight line from Algeciras to Cabo de Gata in Almeria, veered off course and ended up on the sand bank near Almayate.
