Briton missing after Sierra Nevada avalanche


AROUND 100 rescue workers are still searching for a 42-year-old English father-of-one missing following an avalanche in Sierra Nevada on Sunday. The Guardia Civil specialised canine units immediately began searching for the experienced hiker, called John, who lives in Zafarraya, Granada.

At some points of the 300 metres where the search is being carried out, the snow is 10 metres deep, and the risk of another avalanche has complicated the task.


The man was with two other male hikers, both Spanish and aged 43, at the time, when the avalanche which began on the Barranco de San Juan in the area known as Virgen de las Nieves.

They were slightly injured but were able to escape and alert the emergency services. The missing man is a widower and has a son aged four. He was an experienced hiker.
