A 56-year-old photographer from Brixton was convicted of numerous counts of indecent assault on several females when they were young children at both his flat and at the nearby swimming baths in the Brixton area. The offences occurred throughout the 1980s. David Trainer (19/2/54 – 56 ys) of Lambeth was convicted on Wednesday 9 February following a seven day trial at the Inner London Crown Court.
He was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment, made to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life and made the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).
David Trainer, nicknamed ‘Bungie’, carried out a string of sexual assaults against the young children. At the time he was involved in photography and children’s television programmes.
The assaults occurred whilst he was either babysitting the children or taking them swimming. Young children from the Loughborough Estate in Brixton often visited his flat, some of which stayed overnight.
DC Kevin Snow from the Lambeth Child Abuse Investigation Command said:‘Justice for the victims has been a long time coming. We recognise that the verdict can never restore the lost childhood suffered by the victims but it proves it is never too late to hold an offender accountable for his crimes, it is never too late for justice to be done. The victims demonstrated remarkable strength and courage in coming forward. This was an extremely difficult case and I commend the victims for their resolve and fortitude throughout the investigation and subsequent trial. It is hoped this verdict will send out a strong message to offenders that the Metropolitan Police Service will pursue allegations no matter how long ago the incidents occurred’.
Police believe there may be others who were victims of David Trainer. They are encouraged to call the Lambeth Child Abuse Investigation Team on 020 7232 6397 in order to speak to a specialist investigator.
