Puerto Rey handbag thieves strike

A BRITISH expatriate woman was robbed by handbag thieves in Vera Playa. It happened while the woman, who did not want to be named, was at Mercadona Supermarket over at Puerto Rey (Vera Playa) on Saturday afternoon.

“As I jumped into my car, after putting my shopping in the boot and my handbag on the back seat,” she explains. “This guy stopped his car right behind mine, hence blocking my exit from my car space, and asked for directions. Thinking nothing of it, I got out of the car, and helped him, jumped back into my car and drove home.”

When she arrived at her home she realised her bag was gone, “it’s the oldest trick in to book, and I don’t believe I fell for it,” she says.

“What first should have alerted me to something being wrong was, I noticed the passenger door was not closed correctly when I jumped back into the car, so I closed and thought nothing of it,” she recalls.

“I can only assume that is how they did it: one distracted me, and the other opened the car door and took my bag,” she says.

The victim says she was “totally duped, I saw nobody around me at the time, and don’t know where his accomplice could have been hiding, but they are obviously well practised and very clever at what they do.”

She wants to warn all the ladies out there to be extra vigilant, and “if this should happen to you…do not get out of your car, like I stupidly did.”
