A town divided over four trees

FOUR elm trees in the small town of Cantoria have divided residents. On one side, there are those who defend the 121-year-old trees planted in an area known as Barranquizo by British Engineers who built the railway tracks from Lorca to Baza, claiming that they are healthy and should be protected as a part of history.

The supporters included the ‘Friends of the Almanzora Palace’ Association, and a large group of young people.

On the other, there are those who say that the trees are diseased and want them cut down completely. A long list of signatures has been collected in favour of this proposal.

The local mayor, Pedro Maria Llamas, has proposed a referendum to find a solution, and although a date has not been set, it is believed it will be held soon.
