Legendary composer John Barry dies

The world of show business yesterday paid tribute to the genius composer John Barry who died of a heart attack aged 77 in New York. Barry – was the mastermind behind the score for 11 James Bond movies, including Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Thunderball and You Only Live Twice.

Born John Barry Prendergast in York in 1933, he also went on to produce the haunting sound tracks for Born Free, Zulu, Out of Africa, Midnight Cowboy and The Ipcress File.


Showbiz stars he had worked with described him as a “true legend”.

Michael Crawford said he had written “some of the most memorable and beautiful scores you would ever wish to hear”.
