Fines on paper could be thing of past

THE Spanish traffic department, DGT, reportedly wants to do away with fines on paper, and now, a new online system can be used to receive notifications of fines. So far, more than 1,700 people in Malaga have used the system. At the moment, only fines issued by the Guardia Civil Traffic Branch are available, although town halls are due to begin using the system within months.

The system is available on te website, www.dgt.es, in a category marked DEV, where an online form has to be filled out.

However, to do so, an electronic ID card (not available to foreign residents) or digital certificate (information available at www.cert.fnmt.es) is needed so that the notifications are issued only to the person they are destined for.

Once the registration is complete, all information regarding a person’s license and vehicles will be received via e-mail.

If a driver receives a fine, they have 10 days to decide whether to accept it. If they do, they can access a file containing information on where to pay.
