New park in Torrevieja opens

The first of Torrevieja’s new parks is certainly one that the city’s residents can be proud of. Located on Avenida de Baleares, it has an area of 10,000 square meters and is dedicated to the memory of former Councillor Jose Ramon Garcia Anton. Setting it aside from other parks in the city, it was constructed by 30 unemployed students from the Workshop for Employment “Habaneras I”.

Last week, the park opened for business on a beautiful sunny, winter’s day, which attracted many local residents along with the widow of the late Councillor Jose Ramon Garcia Anton plus Torrevieja’s Mayor, Pedro Hernández Mateo, mayor of San Vicente del Raspeig, Luis Pastor, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport of the Generalitat Valenciana, Mario Flores plus many members of other political parties, officials and friends of Councillor García Antón.

The opening ceremony was simple but emotional for family and friends of the former councillor and the park was put to immediate use by local children and elderly residents.

The Park was constructed entirely by unemployed students from the Employment Workshop of “Habanera I”. This was the first such park created totally by these students who are studying the specialties of Gardening, Infrastructure Maintenance and Landscaping, all under the watchful eye of their teachers and trainers and run by the director of the Workshop, Carmen Gómez Candela.

The park has cobblestone walkways in various colours, a Children play area, Biosalud apparatus for working out that is aimed mainly at Torrevieja’s pensioners, a circuit training area, a weatherproof ping-pong table, picnic areas with tables and benches, 26 street lights located throughout the park, a sports area for children consisting of a 3-a-side basketball court and small football sala pitch, eight petanca zones, 2,672 meters square of grass, trees and shrubs and a sprinkler irrigation system.
