Torre de Mar Sugar museum project unlikely for summer

TORRE DE MAR – THINGS are not going well with the conversion of the old sugar refinery in Torre de Mar into a museum dedicated to the history of the cultivation of sugar cane in Axarquia. The project has been stalled since February 2008 and in order to complete the project a further €250,000 needs to be invested – not including equipment – according to Tourism Councillor Javier Checa.

Before work can resume the municipal budget for 2011 needs to be approved. This means that the museum will not open its doors this summer.

The work was initially awarded to a company for €1,629,321and was supposed to have been completed within 14 months, but the contractor abandoned the work.

It was then awarded to a second company in June 2005 for €1,649,636 with a lead time of nine months. It then required the budget to be increased by €427,427 and then again by €261,471. It now involves an investment of €2,338,262 and an undetermined completion date.

The delay in opening the building is taking its toll on the property itself with parts of the main facade falling off, and back in April a group of people broke in to have a party.

Local Police found a stereo inside the building, which was deposited at Police Headquarters.
