MALAGA – THE number of people living in the Costa del Sol continues to increase. Malaga Province now has more than 1.6 million inhabitants, according to the National Institute of Statistics. Over the past 12 months, the province has gained almost 20,000 people. Although this is fewer than half the number registered between 2005 and 2006, when it reached 48,240.
The slowing down of the population of the Costa del Sol has been mainly attributed to rising unemployment and the recession.
If this continues, by 2018, the population will only have increased by 11.6 per cent, to 1,787,082 inhabitants, with more than 30 per cent being over the age of 65.
Looking at this year’s arrivals to Malaga, there are more women than men, with 10,364 and 9,629 respectively. That brings the total number of women in the province to 811,393, and the total of men to 788,607.
There are 178 people in Malaga over the age of 100 years, and 6,921 in their nineties. At the other end of the scale, there are 75,443 children under 4-years-of-age.
There are most inhabitants aged 33, with 29,194, of which the majority, 15,125 are men.
