Got to ‘Pick a Pocket’ or two

ALICANTE – A NEW Penal Code aims to reduce the number of pick pocketing crimes. A team of about two dozen pick pockets account for the hundreds of arrests in Alicante Province, according to president of the Provincial High Court, Vicente Magro. Currently pick pockets only get a fine or have to be reachable at home for four to 12 days.

The new code means that perpetrators face jail-time of between six and 18 months if they have been convicted three times.

The Alicante Judical system will be the first in Spain to apply these recent reforms of the Penal Code. A Central Registry has been created to keep track of the crimes and the National Police database will be used.
