San Anton celebrations in La Zenia

MORE than 200 people attended the traditional San Anton mass at the Cristo Resucitado parish church in La Zenia on Sunday. San Anton- whose name is actually St Antonio Abad – is the patron saint of animals and so after the mass there was a blessing of animals by Father Don Joaquin Carlos.

The majority of animals were dogs, although there was a cat, a parrot, some terrapins, and a red legged pheasant that were blessed.

Following the blessing, there was a dog show which was judged by members of the congregation and organisers of the event.

The winner of one of the categories was an adorable three legged Labrador and prizes for the winning owners included a hamper and a box of wine.

Janet and Steve Taylor from El Galan took their dogs with them and said that the event was a great way to integrate with their Spanish neighbours.

“There were some English residents here,” commented Janet, “but the majority were Spanish and they were so friendly and welcoming, it was lovely.”

The Priest commented: “The attendance at this mass and at all the masses at this church, as well as at other events, is a testimony to the brilliant cohesion that there is in this parish.”
