Why Bars and Cafes in Spain Need Free Newspapers

Why Bars and Cafes in Spain Need Free Newspapers – Last week I wrote about the case for FREE Wi-Fi and how it could be used as a means of attracting and retaining customers. Now WiFi has a cost so this week I am going to look at a much cheaper idea. How cheap? Well how does FREE grab you?

Why Bars and Cafes in Spain Need Free Newspapers – Last week I wrote about the case for FREE Wi-Fi and how it could be used as a means of attracting and retaining customers. Now WiFi has a cost so this week I am going to look at a much cheaper idea. How cheap? Well how does FREE grab you?

The case for FREE newspapers

Now don’t get me wrong, for many the free newspapers are and will remain an excellent means of getting the news. They remain an ‘authoritative presence’, as we “believe” the newspapers. Not everyone has (or wants) the internet, and the cost of the imported papers is high for expats living abroad, but my point is (or will be) that the free newspapers benefits are more than just the news they contain.

Spain is a café society. The image of sitting outside on a terrace in a buzzing city square, or overlooking a sandy beach while drinking one of the many types of coffee drank in Spain , chatting with friends, debating the world, arguing, agreeing, laughing and crying is one we can all picture – but without one vital ingredient it fails. The ingredient? Content! We need something to debate, to argue over, to show an interest in. How many times have you walked past a bar or cafe and seen people at a table just… well just sitting really?

Now put a couple of papers into that scene. Papers with news, columns, photographs, classified, adverts, articles, information, opinion, views and facts (and not a little fiction at times I suspect!). All of a sudden we have something to talk about, to compare, to show each other, to interact with.

One coffee? Hell no, bring me a second I am talking. I am debating. I am doing something different. No longer am I wondering what to do next, I am living in the moment, I am stimulated… I am alive, bring me a glass of red so I can celebrate.

And that starts to become the point. Life can be boring, it can be very much the same from one day to another. Same places, same routines, same people, same conversations. I hazard a guess that if all the bars and cafes here in Spain grabbed the free newspapers and placed them on the tables in the morning, took them out to people when they ordered a coffee, they would see people stay longer and buy more. The buzz and animation would attract others… I may be wrong, BUT until they try it who will ever know, and let’s face it they are FREE, and it isn’t that hard to put a few out on each table in the morning under the ashtray now is it?
