A recent study by the University of Arizona revealed office workers are exposed to more germs from their phones and keyboards than toilet seats. According to the study, work stations contain nearly 400 times as many microbes than lavatories, as food spills and not paying enough attention to personal hygiene can cause bacteria to accumulate on the keyboard, mouse and phone. Office equipment should be regularly disinfected to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria responsible for disease. This week, The Euro Weekly News went out to ask the readers what they thought of the study.

Wafaa, 20, from Morocco says: “I can believe that! Keyboards must be covered in things that we can’t see by just looking at them with the naked eye. I think it’s a good idea to cover the keyboard with something after each use to keep it cleaner, although it won’t prevent the problem; at least it gives us a little more protection.”

Mrs A Greenhorn, 50, from Alhaurin de la Torre says: “Well, it’s not surprising really! People aren’t all that hygiene conscious as a rule and don’t always wash their hands when they’ve been to the toilet. They sneeze and cough all over the place and very rarely put their hand to their mouth or use a handkerchief. It’s surprising there aren’t more germs floating around and that we don’t all come down with colds more often.”

Reese Williams, 37, on holiday from Abergavenny says: “I think people in general, and scientists in particular, are getting far too fussy about germs and we are told that everything is bad for us one minute and good for us the next. If we listened to all these scaremongers we would never go anywhere, eat anything or do anything. It’s silly; there have always been germs and here we still are.”

Elizabeth Wibrow, 30, from Malaga says: “If office workers are exposed to all those germs on their keyboard, one dreads to think what lies in wait when using the equipment at a cyber café.”

Muriel Hornyby-Smythe, over 21, from Marbella, says: “Every week it seems the experts come up with yet another germ scare. Now we have all sorts of nasty bugs on our keyboards. If all the dire warnings of the past year had come to fruition, we should all be dead by now.”

Claire Dubois, 27, from Nantes (France) says: “I have heard about this study and I think it is true, but not about my computer. First, I never eat or drink at my computer, and, second, I’m always cleaning it. Seriously, it’s amazing how much dust gets trapped down between the keys even if you’re careful and hygiene conscious. I don’t know about my phone, though, I hadn’t thought about cleaning that for germs, or my mouse. I’ll have to get my wet wipes out!”

John Williams, 45, from Coin, says: “Well, if it has been scientifically proven then I suppose it must be true although I would have thought there were much more important things these scientists could have spent their time researching.”
