    PALMA - IT was revealed this week that many day centres for the elderly may have to be shut down as the Consell de Mallorca has not handed out the allotted money. “We are being choked bit by bit” complained Tomeu Valls, President of one these centres in Palma. The Association for the Elderly is owed eight months rent and maintenance costs, leaving its members feeling “ignored and under-appreciated”.

    IN honour of the “Year of Chopin” in the Baleares, the mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo and president of the Palma Council assisted in the inauguration of a commemorative plaque to Frederic Chopin and his lover George Sand on Calle Apuntadors, where the couple first stayed when they moved to Mallorca in 1838.

    LLUCMAJOR - A MAN died of smoke intoxication as he slept on a mattress in his neighbour’s garage. It is suspected that the death was accidental, caused by a cigarette or candle near the bedding. It is unknown why the man was there. His family are in the care of a Red Cross psychiatrist.

    THREE substancial fires all in the space of 24 hours. The first took place at Son Marroig, a farm in the Deia area, where a bonfire leapt out of control under the influence of strong winds. It took a few hours to extinguish due to the windy conditions, leaving 3000 square metres of farm land and 2000 square metres of forest burnt.

    Coll d’en Rebassa - A BUILDING on Passatge Galaico, Coll d’en Rebassa, has been evacuated due to deterioration of the beams supporting the top flat. The owners have been given a time limit to make repairs, so their neighbours can move home as soon as possible. The building has been temporarily propped by firemen, for fear of another collapse, like the one in the same area last October.

    PALMA - TWO men have been detained for illegally selling tampered with medicines. From their base in Son Gotleu, Palma, the two men aged 64 and 56 changed the documentation on the tranquilisers and steroids obtained from pharmacies and sold the tampered products to a long list of clients. The men have been charged for falsification of documents and for putting public health at risk.

    SOLLER - THIS week Palma court confirmed that an ex-soldier who attempted to steal from a mobile phone shop in Soller and rape the shop assistant will be given a five year prison sentence. The sentence was issued despite his claims of suffering from post-mission trauma after his tour of duty in Bosnia. The young woman was in the process of locking up when the accused accosted her and pushed her back into the shop, forcing himself upon her.

    MALLORCA - CHANTS of “Right to live”,  “Life for Baleares” and “Spain, Life, YES!” where to be heard echoing through the streets of Palma on Sunday March 7, where 500 anti-abortion protestors gathered to object against new abortion laws. Although the protest was against abortion, the stimulus for the display over the weekend was to emphasise the horror felt over the new law which will allow girls as young as 16 to have abortions.

    PALMA - THE controversial Gesa building on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma has been declared as listed and therefore worthy of renovation. Despite years of debate as to whether the building is an eye-sore or relic from times gone by, Palma Town Hall have finally decided to keep it standing. Damage repairs are to start soon.

    MANACOR - SOCIAL services technicians in Manacor have launched an “Intercultural Cohabitation” plan, in order to deal with some of the issues that arise from the increasingly immigrant population. According to Catalina Riera (Partido Popular), the plan of action is to gain a better understanding of the situation and find the means to enforce the norms “for everyone, immigrant or not.”

    FELANITX - THANKS to SOIB and the Ministry of Labour and Formation, the Calvary walk at Felanitx is to be restored. Ten labourers who have been on the dole for over a year have been offered work rebuilding the stone walls and foot path of the renowned Puig de Call, which promises to be a lucrative touristic and religious attraction.

    POLLENÇA - The municipal animal sanctuary has just been acknowledged and congratulated for its exemplar practice: 418 adoptions and no “sacrifices”, a grand achievement when we consider the rumours of the incinerators of Son Reus refuge in Palma. Josefina Vivancos, who heads up the mission in Pollença, has a very different philosophy to many of her counterparts; no animal is put-down unless it has an incurable disease from which it is suffering with no hope of a cure.

    ANDRATX - Work is to be started separating the drainage system in the town centre of Andratx, where drains and rain water pipes will be separated. The alderman in charge of public works, Xisco Femenias, claims that this should put an end to bad odours and local flooding. The project is expected to cost 830,000 Euros and is due to take 15 months. Femenias has said he will personally tend to all the arising problems and will do his best for a smooth operation.

    campus MALLORCA - THE University of the Illes Baleares (UIB) has declared that it aims to achieve the status of an ‘International Campus of Excellence,’ a prestigious award nominated by the Spanish Ministry of Education. If achieved, the University could gain up to 50 million euros in subsidies for the improvement and creation of new programmes and areas of research.

    shutterstock_48083344_web ALCUDIA - ANTONIO S.V,  28 from Inca with no advanced studies, managed to pass himself of as a young doctor, practicing a total of eight shifts in both the Alcudia PAC and Ambulance Network. Obviously this has generated much concern and criticism of IB-Salud, who claim they allowed him to have an observatory role so as he could finish his alleged medical dissertation project.

    CALA MILLOR - PLANNING has gone ahead to create a bicycle path to connect the beaches of Cala Millor and Sa Coma for this coming summer. The mayor of Sant Llorenç, Mateu Puigros, has pushed for this idea with much enthusiasm as he believes it will not only be attractive to neighbours and tourists but will also create three months of work for 20 labourers.

    MALLORCA - A young German couple were found in the early hours of Monday morning after being missing in the Tramuntana Mountains for 24 hours. The hikers were due to arrive at Can Boi Refuge on Sunday evening, however they became disorientated in the Es Teix region and had to spend the night out in the freezing temperatures. A search party was sent out immediately, only to have success at dusk on Monday evening. The couple were sent straight to PAC in Soller where they are being treated for hypothermia symptoms.

    José Juan P.P, 53, alleged murderer of his partner Joana Maria Rebassa in their shared, supervised home last month, has been moved from prison to Son Dureta hospital. After suffering a mental breakdown, guards called in psychiatric experts who confirmed that the accused was delirious, suffering from paranoiac illusions and incapable of understanding what was being said to him.

    PALMA - A Chilean man has been condemned to six years jail for viciously attacking a man in Palma he suspected to be having an affair with his girlfriend. On suspecting infidelity, the condemned man stole his partner’s phone and started texting her alleged lover, arranging a meeting. However, instead of finding the woman concerned the victim was confronted with an angry man yielding a baseball bat.

    PALMA - PEOPLE are getting tired of all the corruption that has been taking place in Balearic politics, so much so that on Thursday March 4 saw a “human chain” gather in Plaza Cort to protest against it.

    MALLORCA - TWO out of every ten youths in Calvia admit that they smoke cannabis, six per cent of them every day. The survey was carried out amongst 570 local youths, of which 54.2 per cent admit to consuming drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

    MALLORCA - TAXI drivers in Manacor are complaining that others from Palma are causing them losses of up to 60 per cent. They say that the Palma drivers pick up passengers in the hotel areas and at the hospital, losing them trade.

    PUERTO ANDRATX - Last weekend a BRIT, 53, narrowly escaped loosing his house as the over-loaded wood chimney caught light, setting the rest of the chalet on fire. Luckily firemen were quick to come to the scene, putting an end to complete chaos. The house will need a severe clean up and some restoration.

    PALMA - “It had to happen” claimed one of the witnesses of the accident which took place Monday night in front of Son Dureta hospital in Palma. The man, who has been revealed as Hassan Brilan, is renowned in this district for “Bullfighting” with the traffic, resulting in his local nickname; “El Toreador” (or The Bull Fighter).
